Another ugly loss for the Detroit Tigers

Sine we are in the middle of summer we try not to over react to any one baseball game. In the end each game is merely 1 of 162, but losses like the one the Detroit Tigers suffered tonight tend to burn, and stick with the fans and writers for a little while. By DJC’s count it was the second ugly loss in the last five days. And that really seems to be the problem with this team, the winds feel mediocre, but the losses feel spectacular.

Tonight felt like a giant set up, the heat, a real untested rookie on the mound, and a pretty good Los Angeles Angels team as the opponent. As hard as it is, we might have to over look this one. DJC supports the idea of giving Jacob Turner a spot start here and there, but it does not look like he was as good as advertised. We saw a report from a week or so back that he got lit up in a start for the Toledo Mud Hens so he may be in a little bit of a rough spot. With that being said tonight’s performance, with many scouts in the stands, certainly didn’t help his value on the trade market.

This brings us to the core problem of the 2012 team. There are just too many guys who are not living up to what the front office, fans, or any one else thought they would. The supporting cast is terrible, and that fault for that lies with the General Manger. A good GM upgrades his team every chance he gets and the simple fact here is the Tigers didn’t do that. They replaced Victor Martinez with Prince Fielder and to be perfectly honest DJC would rather have Victor at this point.

Let’s be real honest here, Brennan Boesch, Ryan Raburn, Delmon Young, many of the hurlers both starters and relievers have had disappointing years. Is that enough to give the front office a pass? We do not believe so. We feel that Dave Dombrowski should not have been fooled by the career years of many of these men had last year, and worked harder to find upgrades in the supporting cast. We firmly believe the biggest fault of this front office is they are far too loyal to the wrong guys. We also feel that every Dave Dombrowski contract goes at least one year too long.

For now it seems it is all about winning series for the Tigers. As long as they keep winning series they should be ok. With that being said, the Cleveland Indians are coming to town. It would be nice to see the Tigers play their best ball in those three games and earn a sweep. It would put them firmly back in the race for the division crown and likely help put them closer in the wild card standings.

Until we see this team play well over an entire series against a quality opponent we shall remain very skeptical on how far we think this roster can go in 2012.
