This is what you sign up to watch when two nationally ranked Big Ten teams square off. The #7 Indiana Hoosiers lead most of the way, but Michigan State continually battled to keep it close. The Spartans pulled within a single point, 71-70, on a Branden Dawson dunk with three and a half minutes left in the game, but failed to score on their final five possessions and Indiana eventually won 75-70.
Michigan State shot well over the top of Indiana’s zone defense — going 11-23 on three point attempts — but they couldn’t find enough additional buckets to claim a second half lead. The Spartans actually shot better on three-point attempts (48%) than they did on two -point attempts (43%).
Keith Appling was pretty much a non-factor for Michigan State. He fouled out after playing only 19 minutes and scoring just three points. Gary Harris lead the Spartans with 21 points, Adreian Payne added 18, and Branden Dawson chipped in 12.
Indiana was lead in scoring by Voctor Oladipo who scored 21 points on 12 field goal attempts. Cody Zeller scored nine points, including the final layup that gave Indiana a two-possession lead inside the final two minutes.
Michigan State will host Illinois next Thursday at 7:00 PM.
