In a lockout-shortened season, every point in the standings will be at a premium. That makes the points up for grabs in game like tonight’s matchup between the Red Wings and Stars all the more important. The teams are two of the six Western Conference teams currently sitting at five points on the season in a log jam that would put some teams in the playoffs and some teams out. There is still a lot of season left but tonight’s game represents an opportunity for one team to put some space between them and their opponent.

The Wings and Stars resemble each other based on more than just the standings. Both are struggling offensively to start the season. The Red Wings have 11 goals for through five games while the Stars have 12 through six.

Dallas defeated the Red Wings in Detroit a week ago. Michael Ryder scored twice to lead the Stars to the 2-1 victory. The Red Wings outshot the Stars 40-31 but could not get a puck behind Kari Lehtonen until the final seconds. The Red Wings will look to return the favor tonight.

Prediction: Red Wings 2, Stars 1
