To the average college basketball fan, March Madness is still a few weeks away. For players and fans of the game at lower levels, things have really heated up.

In fact, the state’s first march madness ticket was punched this evening when NCAA Division III’s Calvin College defeated Hope College to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament championship. Calvin’s 77-57 victory secures the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament for the Knights.

Calvin will learn their tournament opponent when the NCAA releases the bracket on Monday afternoon. A strong regular season could have the Knights in position to host a first round game at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids next Saturday.
