Detroit Lions Free Agency Round-up: Day 2

What was thought to be an active weekend in free agency, due to the NFL’s new three day negotiating period, turned into a day of pure speculation as the NFL issued an email to each team warning against the possibility of tampering. No agreements, real or implied, are permitted. Agents were leveraging teams against teams, and players were trying to feel out the market. We take a look back at the reports that tied any, and all players to the Lions.

The first news too come across this morning was of Jarvis Jones, Georgia’s OLB/DE, being cleared of his neck injury by leading orthopedist Craig Brigham. He had been diagnosed with a serious spinal cord contusion his freshman season at USC before transferring to Georgia.

Dr. Brigham issued a statement to every NFL team saying “Jarvis is cleared to play without restriction.”

This bodes well for Jones, and the top of the NFL draft board. The Lions had been linked to Jones in many mock drafts before word of his injury.

In other news, beat writer Mike O’Hara says defensive end Jason Jones, formerly of Eastern Michigan, should be a free agent to watch in the coming days. He began his career with the Tennessee Titans, as Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator, staying for four seasons and racking up 15.5 sacks. Last season, Jones played for the Seattle Seahawks tallying three sacks without recording a start.

We found out the reason for the silence surrounding free agent cornerback Chris Houston. The Lions starting corner signed with a new agency today, allowing him to pursue the market that will kickoff on Tuesday.

Many rumors are sure to swirl around the organization in the coming days, make sure to check back for the latest Lions news.
