After losing backup defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill to the Tennessee Titans early in free agency, the Lions have a need for depth behind starters Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. Early in the off-season, they brought in veteran defensive tackle Mike Patterson for a visit, as well as signing Jason Jones, who will play both defensive end and tackle.
He has spent time with four teams in his eight seasons in the NFL. Last season, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he posted a career high 45 tackles, adding 2 1/2 sacks while tallying 13 games started. He is best known for his run defense prowess, posting a +7.1 run defense rating while countering that with a -1.3 pass rush rating. In 2011, he ranked No. 14 in run stop percentage with a +8.6 rating, according to Pro Football Focus.
He was slated to make $2.475 million with the Jaguars in 2013 before his release.
