Oakland University To Join Horizon League

According to a report by the Detroit Free Press’ Rob Demovsky, Oakland University will be leaving the Summit League to join the Horizon League.

A source confirmed that Illinois-Chicago is leaving the Horizon League for the Missouri Valley Conference.

The source also said it is “a done deal” that Oakland University will join the Horizon League, which already contains Detroit Mercy. The Golden Grizzlies currently play in the Summit League.

The Horizon League will provide a natural local rival in University of Detroit Mercy as well as a step up in overall competition level. According to the Massey Ratings, the Horizon league was the #14 conference in Division I basketball this past season, while the Summit League checked in at #29.

Oakland made the NCAA tournament out of the Summit League in 2010 and 2011.
