Breaking: Jose Valverde To Join Detroit Tigers Wednesday

Oct 24, 2012; San Francisco, CA, USA; Detroit Tigers pitcher Jose Valverde throws a pitch against the San Francisco Giants in the seventh inning during game one of the 2012 World Series at AT

You say potato, I say Valverde! Jose Valverde is back! He is returning to the team Wednesday after the Tigers purchased his contract and signed him to a one-year deal. He will join, now former closer, Bruce Rondon for Wednesdays game at Comerica Park. Brayan Villarreal will be sent down to the Toledo Mud Hens to make room Another roster move will be made tomorrow to clear a spot on the 40-man roster according to Dave Dombrowski. And just like that, Jose Valverde will take the closers role….again.

It makes you wonderif this was the actual plan all along.  The Tigers were more than happy to let Jose Valverde walk when he wanted a multi-year deal. They justified this by telling fans that Bruce Rondon was the closer of the future. After Rondon’s failure to make the club out of spring training, Dombrowski offered Jose Valverde a minor league deal. Apparently now, after only two weeks in Lakeland, Valverde is ready to rejoin the Tigers as their closer.

Did Dombrowski use Rondon as leverage in Valverde’s contract negociation? When the Rondon plan failed did the Tigers and Dombrowski simply get lucky that Jose Valverde remained unsigned? Whatever the case the biggest story of the early season got just a little bit bigger.

We will see how this plays out when the Tigers face the Royals Wednesday at Comerica Park.  Game time is 7:00 and you can watch the next chapter in the bullpen drama unfold on Fox Sports Detroit.
