Motor City Bengals is reporting that Bruce Rondon will be recalled from the Toledo Mud Hens to replace Octavio Dotel. Octavio Dotel is being placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 20th for right elbow inflamation. Dotel has been struggling as of late posting a 13.50 ERA and 3.000 WHIP in 4.2 innings. This comes at a time when the bullpen has been stressed from a couple extra inning contests while on the west coast.
The recall of Bruce Rondon should reignite the closer contraverscy. Bruce Rondon was named the closer early in spring training but failed to make the team out of camp. The closer role was operating by committee until Joaquin Benoit emerged as the front runner during the Tigers recent road trip. Although Joaquin Benoit has been pitching the ninth inning lately, Jim Leyland has stopped short of naming him the regular closer saying only that he is the guy “right now” for the role. With Bruce Rondon back in the mix the closer committee questions will again be pushed to the top of the agenda, which should make for some cranky post game responses from the skipper.
The Tigers open a 9 game home stand with a three game series with the Kansas City Royals tonight at Comerica Park. First pitch is at 7:30 and you can catch the game on Fox Sports Detroit.
