It was surreal at Comerica Park as Jose Valverde returned to the team for the first time since the 2012 play-off meltdown. Valverde who signed a minor league contract was promoted to the Detroit Tigers yesterday from Lakeland. If you were a screen writer you couldn’t have written it any better as the much maligned Valverde jumped out of the dugout to close out another Tigers game. Papa Grande came out to the mound throwing nothing but fastbalsl and induced two ground balls before a long flyout to Billy Butler to end the game.
National Sports writers took to twitter to applaud The Big Potato:
Jose Valverde’s presence impacted the 6th, 7th and 8th innings. That’s one reason why the Tigers brought him back.

Valverde, nothing but fastballs, 18 straight. Three up, three down. He touched 95 mph and was around the plate on every pitch. Impressive.

Valverde may be the short term answer while the Tigers troll for a closer.

1-2-3 for Papa Grande. And you were worried…. #Tigers win 7-5 to snap 4-game slide

Jose Valverde may get another chance today as the Detroit Tigers finish a rain shortened series against the Royals at Comerica Park. 1:05 first pitch you can catch the game on Fox Sports Detroit.
