The Lions took defensive end Ezekiel Ansah with the 5th overall pick on Thursday. They’ve now bolstered their defense with the selection of cornerback Darius Slay.

He ran the fastest forty-yard dash by any cornerback at the combine (4.36), and is known for his physical play (standing 6-foot, 192 lbs. with long arms of 32 1/4 inches). ESPN’s Chirs Mortensen had this to say following the selection.

Mississippi State DB Darius Slay. Personnel men said his physicality was the one thing that consistently showed up on film. Lions make another addition to defense. Drafted Ansah, signed Glover Quinn & Jason Jones.

Last year Slay started opposite of teammate Johnthan Banks (who was also considered a possibility for the Lions) in 13 games. He recorded 40 tackles, six passes defended, and five interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

The Lions have now revamped an entire secondary that ranked 22nd in pass defense in 2011, while allowing nearly 950 passing yards in their final two games (including the playoffs), and 14th in 2012.

They re-signed cornerback Chris Houston and Louis Delmas, while adding safety Glover Quin.
