It’s only the first sweep earned this season by the American League Champions but it came against the Braves who were 15-6 before they came to Detroit. The Detroit Tigers (13-10) were able to do something against the Braves other teams haven’t; score runs. The Detroit offense scored a whopping 25 runs in three games against Braves pitching. The most encouraging thing about the offensive explosion was the contribution of designated hitter Victor Martinez. V-Mart had 3 RBI and scored 3 runs as his bat is finally started to warm up.
The series also featured notable pitching performances. On Friday in Game 1 Anibal Sanchez struck out 17 over 8 innings for his part of a shutout victory. In Game 2 Rick Porcello answered critics after his last outing when he gave up 9 earned runs in less than an inning of work. Porcello bounced back going 6 1/3 innings surrendering 3 earned runs. On Sunday Doug Fister rose to the occasion and completed the sweep giving up 3 runs over 7 innings. The bullpen was excellent as well sacrificing only 1 run while earning 2 holds and a save.
The sweep also gives the Detroit Tigers their longest win streak of the season. A streak they look to extend tomorrow against the Minnesota Twins. The Twins have posted an 11-10 record this season, better than expected. Two of those wins came against the Tigers in the opening series in Minneapolis. You can catch first game of the three game series from Comerica Park at 7:08 pm on Fox Sports Detroit.
