Detroit Red Wings Jimmy Howard Steals Game 4

The critics were waiting for Jimmy Howard to put his stamp on the Detroit Red Wings playoff run. They say “a goaltender is not considered elite until he steals a game in the playoffs”. Well if that was the criteria Jimmy Howard met it.

Howard was brilliant keeping the game scoreless despite a poorly executed and sloppy first period by the Red Wings. Later he made great saves on shot after shot. He caused so much frustration for Chicago Blackhawks Captain Johnathan Toews that he took a penalty for cross checking after a failed scoring attempt.

Howard’s outstanding performance left the entire Blackhawks team frustrated and handed the Chicago Blackhawks their third consecutive loss the for the first time this season.  The loss pushes the Blackhawks to the edge of elimination forcing them to win three elimination games in order to move on the the Western Conference Finals.

Jimmy Howard was solid all game long. But as the game got later the Red Wings defense got better.  Late in the third period Yakub Kindl took a 2:00 penalty. On the ensuing power play the Red Wings held the Blackhawks to zero shots. After that it was all over but the crying as Joe Louis arena crowd roared and the Chicago Blackhawks looked lifeless.

Jakub Kindl scored a power play goal midway through the second that turned out to be the game winner. Dan Cleary scored an empty net goal in the third to lock it up for the Wings.
