Max Scherzer accomplished something a Detroit Tiger hasn’t done since 1909. In that year Tigers great “Wabash” George Mullin started 10-0. He is also the first pitcher in the Major Leagues to start 10-0 since Roger Clemens did it in 1986. Clemens went on to start 14-0 and won the Cy Young and MVP with a 24-4 record and a 2.48 ERA.
All that said Max Scherzer is having a great session. One of the best in Detroit Tigers franchise history. A player could get caught up in the stats and history and want to give themselves a pat on the back. Not Max. He is just happy the team is winning. “Win Loss is such a flukey stat” Scherzer said in his post game press conference “I am just concentrating on the things I need to do to be a good pitcher, not win loss”.
Flukey stat?!? Maybe so but Cy Young awards are handed out based largely on this flukey stat. And undefeated is still undefeated no matter how you view the stat.
Max Scherzer is keeping his feet on the ground and his multi-colored gaze on the ultimate prize, a World Series Championship. He knows the best way to help his team is to be a “good pitcher”. He also knows a “good pitcher” can’t win it on his own. No matter what his record is.
