Jose Alvarez To Start For Detroit Tigers Against Boston Red Sox

The Detroit Tigers have optioned Avisial Garcia to Toledo and have recalled Jose Alvarez.  Alvarez will start tonight against the Boston Red Sox in place of Anibal Sanchez who was recently placed on the disabled list with a trained shoulder.

Jose Alvarez made his major league debut against the Cleveland Indians on June 9th in place of Anibal Sanchez. Alvarez was lights out going 6 innings while scattering 3 hits, striking out 7 and surrendering only 1 run.

Alvarez was drafted by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent  2005. In 2009 he was included in a trade with Hunter Jones to the Florida Marlins for Jeremy Hermida. Alvarez had limited success in the Florida Marlins system and was granted free agency after the 2012 season. He was quickly signed by the Detroit Tigers and plugged into the MudHens rotation.

Alvarez is 5-4 with a 2.78 ERA for a struggling Mudhens team.  With the Jose Valverde situation still being sorted out, it is possible Alvarez could stick on the Tigers roster for some time if Dave Dombrowski decides to release Valverde.

You can watch Alvarez make his second Major league start tonight against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park.  First pitch is 7:08 and you can catch it on Fox Sports Detroit.
