For the second straight year a Detroit Tiger’s starting pitcher should be starting the MLB All-Star game. However, this time it’s Max Scherzers turn.
With his 11-0 start Max Scherzer has earned the right to start. Here is is All-Star resume.
- Leads the American League in wins
- 2nd in WHIP 0.91
- 2nd in Strike-outs 122
- 6th in innings pitched
- Opponents bat only .192
- 2nd in OPS against .242
- First to start 11-0 since 1986
The other candidates to start the All-Star game are Bostons Clay Bucholz (9-0)and The Oakland Athletics Bartolo Colon (10-2).
Clay Bucholz has is currently on the DL and it is questionable whether he will be available by the All-Star game.
Bartolo Colon has been great with the A’s but his recent connection with PED’s makes him an unlikely starting candidate.
The fact that Jim Leyland is the American League manager doesn’t hurt matters either. Leyland has been characteristically quiet about the issue but seeing Max perform every five days should help the cause. An announcement about who the starting pitcher will be will not likely come for a couple of weeks. However it is safe to say if Max Scherzer continues his streak he will be toeing the rubber for the 2013 American League All-Star team in the first inning.
The All-Star game will take place at Citifield on Tuesday July 16th. Coverage will be on Fox.
