In an interview with Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press Tom Gores spoke publicly for the first time since hiring Phil Jackson as a consultant. I was speculated (even by this blogger) that Phil Jackson was brought in to eventually take over the General Mangers role. That proved to be just speculation as Joe Dumars retained total control of the franchise. Tom Gores was candid about several things in the interview but stopped short of giving Joe Dumars a play-offs or bust ultimatum.
It also appeared the Gores will have a hands on approach when it comes to the Detroit Pistons free agent push. Gores told Vince Ellis that he an Joe Dumars have a plan to “tag team” the free agent process. When asked if he (Gores) was “going to be in command central trying to woo free agents” Gores responded:
Absolutely. Joe and I have already talked about it. Joe and I are tag-teaming on this. We’re both very serious about doing what we have to do. I’m going to go where Joe and his team needs me to go to bring in whatever powerful players we need to. I absolutely want to be a part of the process and I’m a team player — whatever they need me to do.
Whether or not Tom Gores, the newest owner in the NBA, can be effective at helping attract free agents isn’t clear. However, what is clear is that Tom Gores is going to give Joe Dumars every opportunity to rebuild the Pistons. We will see if Joe can finish the job he started 3 years ago and get the Detroit Pistons on the road to an NBA championship.
