Joe Dumars promised that he wasn’t done with the roster. It also appears he isn’t done looking for a point guard. After news of a possible trade for Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, reports are now surfacing that they have expressed interest in trading for Milwaukee Buck point guard Brandon Jennings. The offer was apparently for the expiring contracts of Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villaneuva.
The Bucks are in a tough spot with Jennings who does not want to return to Milwaukee. The restricted free agent point guard was offered $4.5 million but no other team has signed him to an offer sheet. According to reports Jennings is looking for a four-year deal at just under $5 million per season. A deal Dumars could make work without the albatross contracts of Stuckey and Villaneuva tieing his hands.
The question then becomes what happens to Brandon Knight. Joe Dumars has been telling everyone who will listen that the third year guard will be running the point this upcoming season. So why all the rumors about acquiring a new point guard. Either Joe Dumars is throwing up a smoke screen about Knight or the guard rotation for the 2013-14 season is uncertain.
The Pistons just made two free agent signing at the point guard position, it is hard to believe that Dumars could make a trade for another point guard that would not affect Knight’s status with the team. It remains to be seen whether or not all the back and forth will affect Knight’s motivation to play for new head coach Maurice Cheeks.
