Who is Luigi Datome? Well first of all he is a Detroit Piston. Joe Dumars made official the signing of Luigi Datome a 6′ 8″ forward from the Italian National team. The 25-year-old Italian was named Italian league MVP in 2013 where he averaged 16.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He signed for two years at $3.5 millions per season.
Luigi Datome (“GiGi” as he is known in Europe) is a decorated star in the Italian League.
- In 2007 he won “Best Player Under 22″
- Won an Italian League Championship and Italian Supercup while with Mens Sana Basket Seina
His current team Virtus Roma was 20-10 in Italian League play where he excelled in outside shooting. Datome can light it up. He shoots 51% from two-point range and nearly 40% from behind the arc. Luigi Datome figures to be a rotational player for the Pistons as the starting front court was established with the signing of Josh Smith to compliment big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.
Joe Dumars told Perry Ferrell of the Detroit Free Press:
“He’s a very athletic kid,” Dumars said. “He has big hands. He’s long and can shoot the ball. He’ll help us spread the floor because of his ability to shoot from the outside.”
Not sure how “Gigi” will fit in a rotation with Kyle Singler and Jonas Jerebko but new head coach Maurice Cheeks will have his hands full finding playing time for all bodies in the front court.
