With the 2013 MLB Trade Deadline just days away, The Detroit Tigers have acquired Houston Astros closer Jose Veras for Danny Vasquez and a player to be named later.
Jose Veras is having a break-out season with the Houston Astros recording 19 saves posting a 2.93 ERA. Veras came to Houston this season after spending 2012 with the Milwaukee Brewers. Veras was inconsistent while with the Brewers which lead to being granted free agency after the 2012 season. Astros GM Jeff Luhnow took a flyer on Veras making him the teams closer for the 2013 season. The gamble paid-off for Houston, who now gets a solid minor league prospect from the Tigers Level-A affiliate, West Michigan White Caps.
Houston General Manager Jeff Luhnow was able to acquire yet another piece to aid in the Astro’s rebuilding efforts and had glowing remarks for the prospect he acquired from the Tigers:
“We are excited to get an outfield prospect of Danny’s caliber. He adds to an already formidable group of prospects at the A ball level. Jose [Veras] will be missed as a team leader both on and off the field.”
Jose Veras gives the Tigers Bullpen more depth in the late innings to help protect narrow leads. It is unclear whether Varas will be placed in the closer role. Set-up man Joaquin Benoit has been solid as the teams closer since replacing Valverde at the end of June.
