With NFL Training camp is in full swing and the first preseason game just about a week away, fantasy football owners are starting to feel that burning desire to start scouting teams to determine who they will draft. In this 2013 Fantasy Football Preview Detroit Lions edition we look at 5 Lions owners may want to have on their team roster.
Matthew Stafford -QB
Matthew Stafford was just 33 yards short of recording a second consecutive 5,000 yard season in 2012. Although he threw for just 20 touchdowns, some of the that can be attributed to the Calvin Johnson’s hand injury and the regression of tight-end Brandon Pettigrew. That shouldn’t be of concern this year as Calvin Johnson is healthy and Brandon Pettigrew is expected to return to form. The Lions added RB Reggie Bush to the backfield this offseason. Bush is also expected to contribute to the passing game as a receiver out of the backfield.
Upside: Stafford has some big play weapons at his disposal this season. Defenses will have a hard time covering Detroit’s many offensive options. If your league gives bonuses for big plays Stafford could be great option in the first round. He will rack up the yards and some of those will be long yardage plays.
Downside: Stafford has had issues with his accuracy having thrown 54 INT’s in 45 games. If have the misfortune of being in a league with a turnover penalty. Stafford tendency to throw the ball to the other team may present some problems.
Draft position: Stafford is a legitimate first round pick in large leagues using a basic scoring format. If he is around at the end of the first or early second, nab him.
