This is a series the could be tough for the Detroit Tigers. The Royals are playing great baseball and find themselves 7 games over .500. Their recent surge also has them jsut 4.5 behing in the wildcard race. So needless to say the Royals have something to play for.
The two teams begin a unsual five game series tonight at Comerica Park including a Friday double-header. The sit 7.5 back in the division but can catch up in a hurry if they are able to take advantage of the Tigers recent troubles. On the other hand, if the Tigers can win this series, it will go along way to locking up the American League Central division.
Much is made of the Detroit Tigers great rotation but statically the Royals have the best pitching in baseball. The Kansas City Royals lead the American league with a 3.52 ERA and they are getting contributions all they way down to their fifth starter, last years ace Bruce Chen.
The Royals are still making moves to improve their team. They added speed and defense by acquiring Emilio Bonifacio from the Toronto Blue Jays. Bonifacio may be a key in the series against the Tigers as the Tigers have struggled at times this season against teams with speed.
Miguel Cabrera has hit 5 home runs in his last six games and despite a bad hip is creeping up on home run leader AL Chris Davis. It will be interesting to see if Cabrera can keep up this pace against one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
Prince’s power has all but disappeared but there is reason to be optimistic. Prince is hitting .296 in his last seven games. He is hitting for average again hopefully he can find his power stroke against the Royals.
You can catch tonight’s game from Comerica Park starting at 7:08 on Fox Sports Detroit.
