In the second preseason game against the Browns, the Lions used punter Sam Martin for kick-offs. Reading between the lions (see what I did there) it seems as if the team could be considering using Martin for kick-offs to save the aged leg of veteran kicker David Akers. If that’s the case it could be bad news for the norwegian born kicker and you tube sensation Havard Rugland.
The Lions made headlines when they signed Rugland earlier in the summer as a possible successor to hall of fame hopeful Jason Hanson. Havard Rugland or Kickalicious had Lions fans dreaming of 70 yard game winning field goals based on the ability demonstrated by his trick kick video. In the video he is seen kicking field goals well over 70 yards. Although he has had some success in the preseason, the Lions are likely to go with the more experienced David Akers who has proven he can still be accurate from over 45 yards out.
That is why it is bad news for Rugland that the Lions are trying Sam Martin on the kickoff team. If there was any chance Rugland was going to make the Lions roster it may have been as a kickoff specialist. But Martin has shown he can kick-off effectively which means Kickalicious may soon be relegated to duty on the Lions practice squad.
