Justin Verlander was dealing as the Detroit Tigers bats went into another one of their periodic slumbers. Verlander turned in a solid start going 8 innings and surrendering just 2 runs on 7 hits. But the Tigers bats were quiet in game 1 of the day-night double header, only managing one run in the 2-1 loss.
The only offense for the Tigers came from an unexpected source. Ramon Santiago put the Tigers on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the eigth inning. That was only the Tigers 2nd hit on the afternoon as the Kansas City Royals demonstrated why they have the best pitching in baseball.
The Tigers would get another chance with the middle of the order due up in the bottom of the ninth. However, there would be no late game heroics today as Royals closer Greg Holland slammed the door on the Detroit Tigers chances by striking out Cabrera and inducing Victor Martinez into a game ending double play.
The Tigers continue this key five game series with the Royals tonight at 7:08 from Comerica Park.
