Darius Slay has been impressive so far this preseason. The Detroit Lions second round pick has been taking reps with the first team. Although head coach Jim Schwartz says they haven’t established a depth chart, He is rewarding Slay for good performance so the preseason.
“He’s getting some good reps, but that’s because of his play in the preseason games, his reward is the opportunity to do more. He’s patient in his press technique. His man coverage is good. There’s still a lot of things he’s working on … but particularly his man-to-man skills have been good.”
Darius Slay told Tim Twentymen of Detroitlions.com that he is pleased with his own progress during camp.
“I’ve been working hard on my technique to get better, but I guess they feel real confident about my technique to put me (with starters),” Slay said after practice Sunday. I came into the league ready for some man-to-man and right now I’m just learning a different technique than I learned in college. Right now it’s going pretty well.”
All of this is a good sign for the Lions who are banking on Slay to add depth and talent to the struggling secondary. Even if Slay ended up as the starting corner on opening day you can bet the veteran Ron Bartell will still see plenty of playing time. Even so getting the opportunity to start in the NFL would be something Darius Slay would be honored to do.
“It’s a great opportunity, Everybody wants to have the blessing to be that starter in the NFL and it would be a great opportunity.”
