The Detroit Red Wings have their last restricted free agent signed. Gustav Nyquist signed a two-year 1.9 millions dollar deal. The deal which put the Wings over the cap $600,000, bring the number of forwards under contract to 16. Daniel Cleary is still available and the Wings hope to sign him before camp. Before that happens Ken Holland will have to get make some room by moving a couple of forwards.
The Wings could sign Daniel Cleary before camp even if it puts them over the salary cap. They don’t have to be compliant with the cap until October. But they likely won’t sign Cleary until they see if Todd Bertuzzi, Darren Helm and Mikeal Samuelsson can emerge from training camp healthy. With the glut of forwards on the roster the Wings will have to see who is healthy before they bring on another contract.
Training camp for the Wings begins in mid-September with the exhibition season starting shortly afterward. Thats plenty of time to see if Bertuxxi and Helm are healthy. If they aren’t they could be released to make room under the cap.
