The summer football kicker fantasy camp may be coming to a quick end for Havard Rugland. The Norwegian You Tube sensation could be on the bubble as the Detroit Lions Roster cuts are made to meet Tuesday’s deadline. Teams must cut their Rosters to 75 by Tuesday and to 53 following the final preseason game.
As of right now the Detroit Lions roster has 2 place kickers, David Akers and Havard Rugland. During the last preseason game against New England, Rugland was left on the bench, leaving the place kicking duties to Akers on field goals and punter Sam Martin for Kick-off’s. David Akers emerged from the contest healthy, proving he can still handle a full work load as an NFL place kicker.
Sam Martin had an excellent game. Besides pinning the Patriots inside the five yard line on a punt, he consistently put the ball into the back of the end zone on kick-offs. Sam Martin’s performance on kick-offs in the last couple of games signals the end for Kickalicious, as his only hope of making the team was as a kick-off specialist after David Akers put a strangle hold on the starting kicker job. It is very unlikely the team will keep two place kickers on the 53 man roster.
If cut, Havard Rugland will likely turn up somewhere else in the NFL. Or maybe we will see him at halftime of the Lions games making trick kicks in front of a capacity crowd at Ford Field.
