Nicholls State was supposed to be a tune-up for the Western Michigan Broncos. But just like a tune-up on your car, you open up the hood and find out that maybe your engine needs a little more work than you thought. That is what it was like for Western on Saturday at Waldo stadium after losing to 1-AA Nicholls State.
The Broncos played from behind until Brian Fields ran the ball into the endzone form 9 yards out late in the third quarter. The Broncos gave up the lead again in the fourth quarter setting up Senior quarterback Tyler Van Tubbergen for a game winning drive late in the fourth. The dream of a comeback was shattered when the Broncos final drive ended aburtly when Van Tubbergen threw his sceond interception of the game.
The Broncos put up good offensive numbers 485 yards but it was their inability to score touchdowns that made the difference. Depite moving the ball well the Broncos could only manage 3 field goals, fell behind early and were never able to get control of the game.
The loss drops Western Michigan to 0-2 going into next weeks game against Northwestern. The Broncos are in extreme danger of falling to 0-3 on the season putting additional pressure on the team to win during the MAC schedule.
