Detroit Tigers Magic Number: 7

With tonight’s 4-2 win over Seattle and Cleveland’s loss to Kansas City, the Detroit Tigers magic number stands at 7. For those that don’t know, a magic number is the combination of Tigers wins and Indians loses it will take for Detroit to clinch the American League Central. The Tigers could make a serious dent in that magic number by beating up on the lowly Seattle Mariners. In fact the rest of the schedule favors the Tigers. They won’t have to play a team with a winning record until the playoffs begin.

On the other hand the Cleveland Indians have to play a tough series against the Kansas City Royals. The two teams are locked in a race for the wildcard and Royals have been playing decent baseball down the stretch. After the Royals, the Indians schedule becomes much easier including 4 against the Houston Astros.

Cy Young hopeful Anibal Sanchez goes for his 15th win against the Mariners on Tuesday. Sanchez has pitched very well down the stretch and his league leading 2.50 ERA is starting the generate Cy Young talk.  A win would help his cause and get the Tigers one step closer too clinching their second straight division title.
