The Lions have had no success playing in Washington. This week was different. With this win maybe this year is different.
Last week the Lions made national news when Tony Dungy dropped a Same Old Lions blast after Detroit blew a lead against Arizona on the road. This week the Lions pulled out a quality win on the road against a team desperate for a win.
Detroit had a ten point lead on the Redskins with two minutes remaining when the Redskins began a drive that resulted in a field goal. Down 7, the skins recovered an onside kick that was later awarded to the Lions after an illegal procedure penalty. When the Lions offense took over they had the ball at their own 43 with 1:40 left on the clock. Inside of getting the a first down and running out the clock the Lions lost seven yards and punted the ball back to the Redskins setting up a S.O.L. (same old Lions) scenario.
But it wasn’t the Same Old Lions. Not today.
When the Lions defended a Hail Mary pass in the final seconds of the game securing the 27-20 victory, they shed the S.O.L reputation. At least for a week.
Joique Bell had an excellent game gaining 132 total yards and scoring a touchdown in place of the injured Reggie Bush. Theo Riddick saw his first action of the season and got three touches but only managed 6 total yards.
Calvin Johnson gained 115 yards on 7 receptions including a 11 yard TD catch that put the Lions up by ten late in the fourth quarter.
