It has been an eventful couple of days for General Manager Ken Holland as he tries to get the roster ready for the regular season. The latest move by Ken Holland sends Patrick Eaves to the injured reaserve with a sprained ankle. That opened the door for Corey Emmerton to start the season for the Wings despite clearing waivers and being assigned to Grand Rapids a day earlier.
Ken Holland explained the sudden change to MLive.com:
Had a conversation with Patrick Eaves and he felt he wouldn’t be ready to go in the next 2-3 weeks, he needs the necessary 10 games and 24 days on long term IR to get ready. We were able to maximize our 23-man roster and cap space.”
Emmerton is projected to center the fourth line for the Red Wings when they meet the Buffalo Sabres in the season opener at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday.
Patrick Eaves joins teammates Jonas Gustavsson, Jordin TooToo and Darren Helm as Red Wings who will start the 2013-14 season on injured reserve.
