The Detroit Tigers have made it to the ALCS for the third straight season. Thanks in large part to Justin Verlander’s pitching performance in Game 5 of the ALDS. But because Jim Leyland used Max Scherzer in Game 4 and Verlander in Game 5, Anibal Sanchez will have to start ALCS Game 1.
Anibal Sanchez had an uncharacteristically bad outing for in the 3rd game of the Oakland series. That said he is still the leagues ERA leader and one of the top 5 Cy Young candidates in the American League. So jim Leyland feel confident sending him out to the hill.
Opposing Sanchez will be postseason performer Jon Lester. Lester is 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA this postseason.
Leyland also announced that Jose Iglesias will start at shortstop against his former team. He also made it clear that the starting shortstop will be a game to game decision.
At my age I go one day at a time, So Iglesias will be my shortstop tomorrow night.”
That leaves Jhonny Peralta to tame Fenway’s Green Monster in left field. Peralta has never played left field before he was asked to take reps at the position after returning from suspension. So it will be interesting to see if he can handle the challenges created by Fenway’s unique dimensions.
