The Pistons have a new head coach, exciting free agents, a talented front court, high expectations and now…..a scandal involving head coach Maurice Cheeks.
Not really what the Pistons needed on the eve of a pivotal season in the franchises transition from chump to champ.
Maurice Cheeks was arrested on September 3rd by Birmingham police on suspicion of domestic violence charges.According to a Free Press Story It all started when a women who was visiting Cheek became irate when she found another woman lipstick on a glass according to a Birmingham Police report:
During the argument, (she) threw the glass down a flight of stairs, shattering it on the bottom of the staircase,” the officer wrote in the report. “She stated Cheeks was trying to prevent her from leaving and was taking her belongings out of the suitcase and throwing them around the bedroom … screaming at her to clean up the broken glass and calling her a (expletive).”
The women left after convincing the Pistons coach that she was going to pick up the glass. Instead of cleaning she left and called 9-1-1.
Police arrested Cheeks after the woman claimed she was going to press charges but….
after she arrived at the Birmingham Police Department and spoke to someone on the phone, she said she would not be writing out a statement nor testifying. Police released Cheeks. On Sept. 3, she told another Birmingham Police investigator by phone from Atlanta that she was ending her relationship with Cheeks and did not want the department to pursue charges.
Who was the mysterious caller? It was definitely someone who could influence the women’s decision to press charges. Whoever it is the Pistons owe them a debt of gratitude, otherwise this scandal could have stained an otherwise positive preseason.
