The Detroit Lions lost a heartbreaker to the Bengals at Ford Field on a last second field goal by Mike Nugent. The 54 yard field goal gave the Cincinnati Bengals a 27-24 lead and raised their record to 5-2. The Lions loss drops them to 4-3 and is their first loss at Ford Field this season.
The Stafford to Johnson connection was working in full force today. Calvin Johnson gained 155 yards on 9 receptions including 2 touchdowns. Johnson’s performance helped Stafford rack up a season high 357 yards and 3 touchdowns but it wasn’t quite enough as the defense could not stop the Bengals when it counted.
Of course the defense did not get much help with field position in the final minutes. After getting the ball deep in their own territory, the Lions went three and out. Then the normally sure-footed Sam Martin punted the ball only 28 yards opening the door for the Bengals to get into field goal range with :26 on the clock. Dalton then completed passes to Sanzenbacher and Bernard to set Nugent up for a 54 yard field goal try. And the rest is, as they say, history.
The loss at Ford Field puts a wrap on a lousey sports weekend in Detroit that saw the Tigers eliminated from the American League Championship Series, A nasty injury to the Red Wings Nick Kronwall and a tiny scandal involving Pistons head coach Maurice Cheeks.
Don’t worry Detroit Fans at least Michigan and Michigan State won!
