The seat Jim Leyland sat in at his retirement press conference isn’t even cold yet and Dusty Baker is already expressing interest in the Detroit Tigers job. He did so in and an article posted on USA Today. According to USA Today Dave Dombrowksi has already tried to hire Baker once….for a minor league team.
“Dave was the first guy who tried to hire me,” Baker said today by telephone. “I like to fish, and I knew he’d done his due diligence because he sent me a bunch of fishing brochures from the area where the farm club was located.”I’ve always respected Dave Dombrowski and what Dave has accomplished,” Baker said. “I have the ultimate respect and friendship for Jim Leyland. I’d be flattered and honored to be given such an opportunity.”
Cant’ blame Baker for wanting the Tigers job. What Manager wouldn’t want to manage a line-up with the best hitter in baseball batting third and a guy that could win the Cy Young any given year on the mound.
Dusty Baker does bring some serious qualifications to the table.
- 840 wins
- .540 winning percentage
- 3 time NL Manager Of The Year
On the surface it seems like a good fit but Tiger fans should dig a little deeper. Baker won just one pennant in 20 years as a big league manager. If fans had a problem with Leyland’s 2 AL pennants in 8 years they certainly won’t like Bakers performance in the playoffs. The reason Dusty Baker is available in the first place is because the Cincinnati Reds grew tired of his lack of playoff success.
Does Baker have big League experience?
But is he the guy to get the Tigers their first World Series in 30 years?
