The Michigan State Spartans hit the road and head to Illinois to face the Fightin Illini in what could be a trap game for the Spartans on the eve of the Michigan game.
The Spartans had a lackluster performance last week against the Purdue Boilermakers where the defense once again outscored the offense. After two weeks of improvement Connor Cook took a step back against Purdue. The Spartans will need a rebound performance from Cook to get ahead on the Illini so the defense can do what it does best. Stop opposing offenses.
Spartans quarterbacks coach Brad Salem told the Free Press this week that the sophomore quarterback had a much better week in practice.
“Sometimes it may not look mechanical, but do you throw with conviction?” Salem said. “When you look at the route at the end of the game, on the second-to-last drive to Macgarrett (Kings Jr.), he stepped in and fired the ball. Are you aiming it or trying to guide it? Was it the wet weather at the beginning of the game? Those kind of factors. … He didn’t throw as well in practice (last week), and he knew that. He had some tough practices and showed some frustration that way. But this week, obviously, he’s throwing the ball much better.”
The Spartans need a solid offensive performance this week to avoid a trap loss on the road against a capable Illini team.
