Detroit Tigers Hire Brad Ausmus As Manager (Video)

The Detroit Tigers introuduced Brad Ausmus as their new manager today.  Ausmus comes from San Diego where he worked in the front office.  Previous to being hired as Tigers manager he had no previous experience.  something Dave Dombrowski said he would prefer in a candidate.

The recent success of Mike Matheny in St. Louis, Don Mattingly in LA and Walt Weiss in Colorado may have altered Dombrowski’s thinking.  All of which had no previous experience as a manager.

Although Dombrowski may have preferred experience initially but he recognizes that old system of grooming a manger over time may be changing.

When I was first in the position to make these decisions, a lot of baseball people paid their dues by going to the minors and taking a managerial job, and then working their way up to becoming a big league coach, and then a manager,” Dombrowski said. “In today’s world, though, you have to recognize that there are people who are sidestepping that process and moving right into a job.

Dombrowski didn’t just pluck Ausmus out of the air. He was on the short list for several major league managerial openings this off-season.  The Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs  to name a couple.  So will a retired player just three years removed from the game have what it takes to manage a clubhouse full of superstars. Ausmus believes his recent experience as a player can help him navigate the Tigers “clubhouse dynamic.”
