With all the drama of Tigers manager changes, the Detroit Lions recent success and the Spartan football programs dominance fans may have forgotten about the Spartan basketball team.
The Michigan State Spartans basketball team enters the 2013-2014 season ranked #2 in the country behind the senior leadership of Keith Appling, Adreien Payne and Dan Chapman.
The Spartans return 6 of their top 7 scorers next year and the front court of Adreien Payne and Gary Harris are ready to lead this Spartan squad beyond the surprising sweet 16 finish last year.
During the preseason Tom Izzo commented about how the 2013-14 version of the Spartans has a great chance to contend for a National Championship.
There are teams out there with more talent, but I don’t know if there are teams with a lot more of the combination of talent and experience. There are probably six to eight teams that are good enough (to win it all) as I look at it right now, and then there are always a couple surprise teams that rise up. … It’s always a long shot. But do I think this team has the best shot to get back there than any team I’ve had in six, seven years? Yeah, I do. Am I comfortable with the burden of those expectations? Yeah, I’m comfortable with it.”
Keith Appling has been an assist machine in the Spartans two exhibition games and has been taking care of the basketball in the process. Appling will be the key to the Spartans success as Tom Izzo will run the offense through his senior point guard.
The Spartans open up the season against McNeese State on Friday Night in East Lansing.
