The firing of Eastern Michigan Head Coach Ron English seemed sudden. At the time no reason was dismissal. But a press release obtained by Brandon Folsom of MLive.com sheds some like on the subject.
I received a tape of a situation in which Coach English had addressed the team and used wholly inappropriate language. We hold our coaches and staff to high standards of professionalism and conduct and there is no place, particularly in a student environment, where this language is appropriate. These statement made by Coach English are absolutely unacceptable. My decision to make a change in leadership of our football program was the culmination of a lot of factors including the comprehensive review of our program, the competitive performance and this tape. Our primary interest is in the well being and success of our student-athletes and this will continue to be our priority in every decision we make and every action we take. My focus moving forward is on the quality of our student-athletes’ experience as well as the search process for the next leader of our football program.”
To date their has been no specific examples of the language used but it must have been pretty severe to lead to his abrupt departure. however the Eastern Echo obtained a copy of the Audio tape.
Ron English’s rant didn’t only cost him a job. According to a story by USA Today, if English is fired for cause he forfeits his remaining salary.
Certainly all the recent losing inspired the former head coaches fury. English, who was in the middle of his fifth season, managed only to win 11 games during his tenure as Eagles head coach. That included a 6 win season in 2011.
The Eagles were 0-5 in MAC play this season entering todays game. The Eagles responded to English’s firing by defeating the Broncos this Saturday giving them their first MAC win of the season.
