I have always followed the belief that if you do anything scared you might as well not do it. Gunther Cunningham was coaching scared on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was coaching not to lose instead of to win. Even with Glover Quin injured to not call one blitz in the second half when your defensive line is not getting home is pathetic.
The Steelers have given up the most sacks in the NFL this year and the Detroit Lions got to him once in 45 drop backs by Ben Roethlisberger. The Detroit Lions defensive line has not gotten the job done this year, and all as a result of Gunther Cunningham’s refusal to change his defensive game plan. Cunningham’s ego is writing checks his players cannot cash, and it is costing the Detroit Lions games.
Since they hired Cunningham he has pushed this organization into the belief that a great defensive line can make up for any deficiencies in the rest of the defense. That belief has been one of the downfalls of this defense ever since. With the exception of Suh’s rookie year the defensive line has not lived up to expectations.
Gunther Cunningham may have outgrown the NFL and it may just be time for him to retire. Changing the team defensive philosophy and defensive coordinator maybe the Lions chance to take the next step.
