Jonas Gustavsson is getting his second straight start in net against the Boston Bruins. Starting net minder Jimmy Howard has been benched for the game against Boston so he can get a breather and work through a few things.
Howard insists he is okay but just needs to work through the struggles that have led to a terrible November.
It’s something I’ve got to deal with,” Howard said. “I think I maybe just put a little too much on my plate. I’ve just got to concentrate on stopping pucks. The season started off real good, it’s just been the month of November that’s been not very kind. It’s just something I’ve got to work through.”
The additional items “on his plate” might be stress of auditioning for the US Olympic team. Howard is in line for the starting goaltender spot.
Jimmy Howard’s revelations come after some critical comments from his head coach following Sunday’s win in Buffalo. Babcock put a big portion of the blame for the Red Wings inconsistent play squarely on the shoulder of his golatender.

Despite Babcock’s criticism he tried squash any talk of a goaltending controversy before it began.
We’re going as far as Howie takes us,” Babcock said. “We’ve got an elite goalie who … it hasn’t gone as good. When you’re a goalie, and it happens for you, the spotlight is on you because it affects everything.”
Babcock is hoping that the improved play of back-up Jonas Gustavsson will help the Red Wings put a win streak together.
He’s gotten points in every game he’s played this year,” Babcock said. “He’s done a good job for us. He gives us a chance. It’s important we win games.”
