Miguel Cabrera To Play 1B, Castellanos 3B Next Season

The Detroit Tigers announced the Joe Nathan deal today. But the Press conference brought a lot in insight into what the Tigers line-up and defense will look like next season.

A few weeks ago, reports surfaced in a Venezuelan newspaper that Cabrera asked the Tigers to play 1st base in 2014. Today Dave Dombrowski confirmed the move saying Cabrera will play 1st while log awaited prospect Nick Castellanos will play 3rd base.

Castellanos switched from 3rd to left field in 2011. The move was made assuming Miguel Cabrera would be manning third for years to come. The Prince Fielder trade and Cabrera’s ailing hip flexor changed all that and now the #21 ranked prospect will play 3rd for the Tigers in 2014.

The Castellanos revelation squashes rumors that the Tigers would move Ian Kinsler to 3rd and pursue Yankee free agent 2B Robinson Cano.

Now the spotlight focuses squarely on left field a position identified as the Tigers next major need. However Dave Dombrowski stated during the press conference that the Detroit Tigers would not be in the market for any other major free agent acquisitions. That said the Detroit Tigers have been rumored to still have interest in free agent left-fielder Shin-Soo Choo.
