The Great Lakes Invitational championship game has been delayed until 8:00 pm because of excessive sunshine and warmth. Temperatures topped 47 degrees in Detroit at the original start time of 12:30.
Normally excessive sunshine is a good thing for an outdoor event but when it comes to outdoor hockey it can be troublesome.
Too much sunshine can make it nearly impossible to maintain quality ice. Also sunshine on the ice can cause glare which could be dangerous for the players.
The championship game between the Western Michigan and Michigan Tech will now begin at 8:00pm. Western advanced to the championship game last night by stunning #3 Michigan in overtime 3-2.
The championship game will now follow the consolation game between Michigan and Michigan State at 4:30 pm.
Other Winter Classic activities will go on as scheduled.
