Wow! is really all that can be said of the Red Wings game one performance tonight in Boston. Jimmy Howard turned away 25 shots, some in spectacular fashion, snapping his Game 1 losing streak. Howard’s shut-out was newsworthy enough for a playoff game if it wasn’t for Datsyuk’s magical goal late in the third to win it for Detroit.
Datsyuk scooped up a puck behind him and while moving forward split two defenders. while using one of the defenders as a screen he shot the puck over Boston Goaltender Tuukka Rask‘s shoulder to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.
The Kids Are Alright
The Red Wings “Kid Line” were held off the score board but wore the Bruins down with their speed and energy. Tomas Jurco, Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar cycled the puck in the offense end in a way reminiscent of the Russian five. The repeated had the Boston defense on their heals chasing the puck making it difficult for Boston to establish any rhythm offensively.
The 1-0 Red Wings win gives Detroit home ice advantage and a chance to take control of the series on Sunday. Even if the Wings lose on Sunday they would have accomplished what they set out to do, split in Boston.
Perhaps the second best piece of news from the game was that no one got injured. The Red Wings have been devastated by injuries this season. Hopefully this game proves that they can stay healthy throughout the play-offs.
