The Detroit Rd Wings and Boston Bruins face off at Joe Louis Arena for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. In Game 1 the Red Wings used their speed to play keep away from the Bruins achieved a narrow 1-0 victory. Game 2 saw the Bruins increase their physical presence and slowing the Wings skaters and forcing turnovers.
Now it is time for the Red wings to counter by getting back to speed and puck movement. Defenseman Danny Dekeyser is confident that strategy will work in Game 3.
“When we’re skating hard and playing fast and really moving the puck, that that’s to our benefit. They play a physical game and that’s their game. We want to play with morespeed and more the puck,” DeKeyser said. “I think we’re in a pretty good spot, coming home with this series at 1-1.”
Mike Babcock echoed the sentiment that the Wings must return to playing their style of hockey.
“I’ve been here nine years, we’ve done this nine times, you go through it each and every year,” Babcock said. “You get in a series and you adjust and keep going. For our team to be effective, we have to do exactly what we do.”
Even the most die-hard Boston would have to admit that the Wings game 1 strategy worked against the Bruins. The trick is imposing that style of play against a very talented and physical Bruins team.
Detroit: Jimmy Howard went from Brillant in Game 1 to dull in Game 2. Howard’s turnover in Game 2 led to the Bruins first goal and reenergized the Boston offense. Howard will have to avoid those kinds of mistakes if the Wings hope to regain the series lead.
Boston: Zdeno Chara made is presence felt on the ice in Game 2. If “Big Z” can continue to intimidate the Wings it could be a long night for Detroit.
