Rookie camp is under way at the Detroit Lions Allen Park head quarters. In addition to the 28 rookies under contract with the Lions for the camp a number of other players were also invited to try-out.
Two of 20 additional invitees played for the Central Michigan Chippewas last season. LB Shamri Benton and T Jake Olsen were among those who have a chance to make the roster. Benton had 111 tackles with 2 sacks and an interception for the Central Michigan Chippewas last season.
Benton and Olsen will have a chance to show the Lions coaches they can play in the NFL. Yes it is a long shot but at least it is a shot.
Mid American Conference football has received positive press as of late with MAC players going in the top ten of the NFL draft the last two years. Now NFL teams are turning to the MAC after the draft as well looking for players who could turn into development projects.
The Detroit Lions have a history of looking to the MAC for undrafted free agents. Last season WR Cody Wilson had an on again/off again relationship with the Detroit Lions practice squad. Although Wilson was released from the Lions roster on May 12th, his exposure to the grind of an NFL training camp will help him land a tryout somewhere else in the NFL.
With the increased attention to MAC football, Central Michigan Chippewa players will be getting more looks by NFL teams. That means Chippewa fans can root for their Alma Mater on Sunday as well.
