World Cup: Team USA Draw With Portugal Keeps Group Of Death Alive and Kicking

The most competitive group during world cup match play is always nicknamed the “Group of Death”.  This year the “Group of Death” is Group G and it is certainly living up to the billing.

Team USA missed a golden opportunity on Sunday to advance into the group of 16. But Portugal used extra time to score the equalizer and force a 2-2 draw against the US.

The result sent World Cup Group G into a frenzy, giving every team a chance to advance depending on the outcome of Thursday’s games.

Here is how the Group of Death (Group G) standings look so far:

4 pts
United States4 pts
Portugal1 pt
Ghana1 pt

The United States plays Germany on Thursday in their final match of group play.  If the United States defeats or ties Germany they will advance into the single elimination tournament. If they lose they will be eliminated unless Ghana defeats Portugal.

A Team USA loss coupled with a Ghana victory will give each team 4 points but the US would advance based on head to head play.

If Team USA plays to a draw with Germany both teams will advance.

Getting either a victory or draw will be tough against a German team that is ranked #2 in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings.

A Team USA victory on Thursday would leave the door open for Ghana to advance to the round of 16 with a win over Portugal. Ironic considering that the United States would not be in this position without having upset Ghana in the opening game.
