NBA Rumors: Detroit Pistons Trying To Trade Josh Smith

It was just about a year ago when Josh Smith signed a 4 year $54 million contract with the Detroit Pistons.  The deal surprised the NBA and drew praise from most NBA pundits.

What a difference a year makes.

After a season of poor shot selection and porous defense, Detroit Piston fans have had enough and want to run Smith out-of-town.  Careful what you ask for because the latest NBA rumors ahead of Thursday’s draft indicate that Smith might be headed west and his monstrous waste of cap space contract with him.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN the Detroit Pistons are in talks with at least one Western Conference team about a trade for J(not so)smooth.

The Kings reason for acquiring Josh Smith is a little convoluted.  Apparently Rajon Rondo and Josh Smith are friends. The Kings are hoping that acquiring Josh Smith will be enough to encourage Rondo to approve a trade to the Kings.

That means any deal involving the two would have to happen ahead of the draft which mean talks could heat-up very quickly.

According to Marc Stein’s sources the Pistons would acquire Derrick Williams and Jason Thomas in exchange for J Smooth(as a triangle rolling down hill). But it doesn’t really matter who Detroit gets back because the trade from the Pistons perspective is about getting rid of big contract and freeing up cap space.

And additional cap space would be nice considering LeBron James is now a free agent.
