2014 World Cup: Team USA V Germany, Tie Or Go Home

Team USA is about to play the most important match in American soccer history. On Thursday they will play a German team that is ranked #2 for the right to advance to the round of 16.

The good news is they don’t even have to win. Team USA will advance to the Round of 16 with a win or tie against Germany.

American Keys To The Match

Forward Jozy Altidore will miss the match on Thursday making it more difficult for Team USA to take advantage of the suspect play of the German defense.  That said the United States benefited from excellent play by the midfield against Portugal.  The American midfielders were shooting from distance against #4 ranked Portugal.  They will need to do that against Germany to keep the skilled German strikers from peppering goal keeper Tim Howard.

The United States will also have to score early and often.  Scoring 2 or 3 goals against Germany would enhance Team USA’s chances to advance if it comes down to the second tie breaker.

German Keys To Victory

Germany must try to take advantage of Team USA’s aggressive play and capitalize on turnovers. Portugal got an easy goal in front of goal keeper Tim Howard after a turnover by the defense.  If the Germans can put pressure on the American defense they may be able to create additional scoring opportunities through turnovers
