Since his college career was prematurely ended by a one-year suspension for smoking pot, Mitch McGary’s draft status is a mystery.
A mystery because according to reports, the 22-year old forward has only worked out for and met with one team, the Milwaukee Bucks. Other than that he has not even done team interviews choosing instead to let his agents take care of any correspondence.
To complicate things McGary still untested back is still only at about 80% according to a story by the Freep’s Mark Synder.
One would think all the silence would hurt McGary’s draft status but somehow has helped it. Mitch McGary, once thought to be a second round selection in the 2014 NBA Draft has been rumored to been guaranteed a first round pick.
One of the teams that may be interested in drafting McGary in the first round is the LA Clippers. The Clippers need a rebounder and some draft experts have McGary listed as the best rebounding forward in the draft.
But all the talk about a first round selection is likely just hype and it wouldn’t be a surprise for McGary to be available for the Detroit Pistons selection at 38.
But would Stan Van Gundy draft Mitch McGary?
Van Gundy has said he will be looking for character guys in this draft saying he was going to stay away from players with “red flags”. Is McGary’s suspension for violating the NCAA’s drug policy a red flag? For the average fan probably not but depending on who else is available at 38, it might be enough to keep the Pistons from drafting him.
